black heart today
she brings me spanish clemintine
i eat them by the waterside
throw the peels and taste the clean
how could i still feel so mean

take this meanness out of me

i got a black heart today
no amount of kindness can turn it the other way
even the dogs are tired of me
howling at the trees

take this meanness out of me

i got a black heart today

there was another song in this exchange (although the actual problem it concerned has - i think - pretty much been laid to rest at this point)...

some days earlier, as part of the same unfolding drama, i woke Tart up at like 5 am sobbing and playing "To Make You Feel My Love" by Joan Osborne for her on her iPod. She doesn't let you put her songs on your blogs but here's a link to her singing it on YouTube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sq0lPaTbGt4

Go listen (or find a version without a loud crowd in the background... this version kinda sucks), I love her rendition of the song.... the version on the album has an achingly infinite tenderness...

When the rain is blowing in your face
And the whole world is on your case
I could offer you a warm embrace
To make you feel my love

When evening shatters and the stars appear
And there’s is no one to dry your tears
I could hold you for a million years
To make you feel my love

I know you haven’t made your mind up yet
But I would never do you wrong
I’ve known it from the moment that we met
No doubt in my mind where you belong

I’d go hungry, I’d go black and blue
I’d go crawling down the avenue
No there’s nothing that I wouldn’t do
To make you feel my love

The storms are raging on the rolling sea
And on the highway of regret
The winds of change are blowing wild and free
You ain’t seen nothin’ like me yet

I could make you happy
Make your dreams come true
There is nothing that I wouldn’t do
Go to the ends of the earth for you
To make you feel my love

(words by Bob Dylan of course)
